Regular Expression to really validate email addresses.

So tell me, how does it work?
wazdog posts on Jun 08, 2005 at 13:53
Well, I don't think you'd _really_ use it. :)

It's just here to show the complexity of really validating every viable email address that _could_ exist.

But if you did want to use it, simply plug the above regex into another code snippet that does email validation by regular expression. Most of those snippets out there use very simple regex's that only check for the most common email addresses.

A search on Google for "regular expression email validation" and your desired programming language will turn up billions of examples.

I've posted a regular expression crafted directly from the RFC2822 email specification that should match very nearly every possible email address.

This validator is dominated by checks for new lines, tabs, and unprintable characters which in many situations have no way of getting into the input stream, and even if they do can safely be considered errors.

This "snippet" actually looks like an early version of the matrix.

Of course there are the small matters of Paul Warren's expression not taking into account lengths of parts; IP address limits; or the exclusion of characters beyond 127 (to name but three failings).

The only good reason I can see for the way this is written is to support the author's argument that you shouldn't bother!

Impressive!

But... am Im the only one who gets the result
Array
(
[0] => Array
(
[0] => sdaf@sdf
)

on a php preg_match_all when the input string is
[email protected]\n

witch I suppouse would give me
Array
(
[0] => Array
(
[0] => [email protected]
)
?
